SCHOOL TEACHER (6-8) – SUMIT KUMAR SINGH

International Yoga Day was first proposed by India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. He spoke about the many benefits of yoga and suggested dedicating a day to its practice around the world. The idea received strong support, and soon after, 21st June was officially declared as International Yoga Day by the United Nations.

The date was chosen because it marks the summer solstice, the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. In many cultures, this day holds special meaning, and in yoga, it is seen as a time of energy and change.Since the first celebration in 2015, people across the world have taken part through group sessions, public events, and online classes. The aim is to raise awareness about the importance of yoga and to encourage more people to make it part of their daily lives.

This year marks the 12th International Yoga Day, observed on 21 June 2026 under the theme “Yoga for Wellness, Wisdom, and World Peace.” The theme reflects the growing understanding that yoga is not only a physical practice but also an important part of overall wellbeing.

“Wellness” highlights yoga’s role in supporting physical and mental health. Regular yoga practice may help improve flexibility, balance, posture, stress management, sleep quality, and overall fitness. It is also increasingly being included in supportive care and rehabilitation programmes for certain long-term health conditions.

“Wisdom” focuses on the mental and emotional benefits of yoga. Beyond physical movement, yoga encourages mindfulness, self-awareness, emotional balance, and mental clarity through practices such as controlled breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques.

“World Peace” connects personal wellbeing with collective harmony. The theme reflects the idea that healthier, calmer, and more self-aware individuals contribute positively to families, communities, and society as a whole.

In India, the Ministry of Ayush has launched a 100-day countdown programme leading up to 21 June 2026 to promote yoga participation across the country. The initiative includes yoga activities across 100 cities and mass demonstrations at 100 iconic locations nationwide.
